When I began studying greatness in Canadian history in 1982 with the specific purpose of writing a play about the greatest of all, the over-riding criteria became, "Who was the one critical person, without which, I could not imagine Canada?"

Two years later, Tommy Douglas, became the focus. By 1985, I stopped looking for others...this man was so far ahead (not only his time) but our time, and indeed today in 2010.

"TOMMY DOUGLAS: The Arrows of Desire" hit the stage in Tommy's Canadian hometown of Weyburn, Saskatchewan on the anniversary of his 100th birthday, October 20, 2004. Five weeks later, he was voted the Greatest Canadian in a year-long CBC television event.

Suffice it to say that my studies of the Canadian health care system have been necessarily meticulous in order to do greatness justice. And I see that Sara Robinson done her homework on this. Her observations are insightful and accurate.

The reptilian beast, that is the American health care system, feeds on human illness and misery. The minions of the beast (the jackals and hyenas) which are the AMA, CMA and health care insurers spend as much time tearing at the Canadian system as they do at insuring that the American system continues its service to the Beast. These people have ceased to be human. To them, Humanity is a trough of blood for them to feast on.

Very interesting and helpful article. Question for Eric Harrington: for what reasons do you cross to the US to see docs here? Just curious.
I am a family physician in California; I left private practice to join a multispecialty group. I don't think I spent half my time dealing with insurance companies, but it was truly a factor in my overhead, and cut into the portion I could afford to pay my staff for their own health benefits. AND, if I did not provide them benefits, I would not constitute a "group" and therefore would have had to purchase private insurance for me and my family. I am fairly certain at least one of us would be excluded for trifling things like: strabismus, prior knee surgery, use of certain medications. Imagine that: the doctor can't get health care coverage!

This is a very well written article with a goodly amount of humour and a minimum of pedantic lecturing. And on top of that, I can say, as a Canadian, it is as truthful as any I've read. But you know what? This situation in the U.S. has been living on fear and lies for so long that you will not convince one person who's mind is already made up. The entire country appears to be so badly split on just about every social issue that I don't think there is a solution. I think the country is about to implode and I for one would not feel much sympathy.
