Text of Nobel Peace Prize citation for Obama (And why he deserves it)

A comment:  I think it is unrealistic to judge Obama’s worthiness of this award on what he has accomplished in law.. The Republicans, Fox news, and the conservative reverb chamber have ruthlessly opposed anything and everything he has tried to do. There is no reason, no restraint on their outrageous, unbridled partisanship and obstructionism.  I don’t think it’s completely fair to judge Obama by the brash corporate shils the congress has become.   If congress was on-board, I think he would institute single-payor healthcare for all, closed Gitmo, and pulled out of Iraq. But he knows the political risks are huge and we CANNOT afford to let the Republicans regain control no matter WHAT.. They destroyed 50 years of progress in 8.  I think we need to remember, without congressional support to create laws to fight to corporatists, we are at their mercy, as demonstrated in the economic shakedown they called the bank bailout.

If you were president, and all the “experts” say everything will collapse if we don’t do this bailout immediately, and suddenly the banks all stop lending and the economy grinds to a halt, what can you do, even if you KNOW it’s a shakedown?  The banks CAN create a collapse, and there is nothing Obama can do about it, without pervasive congressional support, and most of those sleazy pols are bought and paid for morons who only care about their own asses..  Obama is not the weak one, he HAS to hold everything together. He CANT afford to make a single mistake.  The Republicans, and to a lesser extent the Democrats in congress are the problem. And Fox News..

I find it amazing that while the Republicans oppose everything and present no alternative, everyone keeps suggesting the Dems are the ones blowing it because they can’t unify to overcome the filibuster. But why are the Republicans ENTITLED to simply obstruct everything Obama tries to do and get a pass just because they are the minority in congress..  They ARE the problem. There is no logic or reason to their obstruction. It is absolute and consequently unjustifiable in this desperate time…

I admit, I am disappointed in Obamas excessive restraint. But what he has done, is he has changed the tone of the discourse internationally, literally overnight, and for the better.     He has made the world hopeful again.  I think people underestimate the transformational power of a such a change in attitude..   And that is worthy of a Nobel..

OSLO (Reuters) – Following is the text of the announcement on Friday by the Norwegian Nobel Committee giving the Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama:

“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

“Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.

“For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world’s leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama’s appeal that “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”
