Angry Cowboy – “People keep sending me things that they know will enrage me”
I should just delete them, but I’m drawn like a rat to a snake to show them the error of their ways. For example, here’s an excerpt, supposedly, from Ben Stein sounding like a southern evangelist and my reply.
“Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her ‘How could God let something like this happen?’ (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, ‘I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?’”
He goes on to blame Madeline Murray, Dr. Spock and anyone who doesn’t go to Sunday School.

My reply:
In the first place, why is he listening to Billy Grahams daughter? Are we still living in the middle ages? Do we still believe that “good bloodlines” crap that the rich and titled have used to bamboozle the peasants for thousands of years? Even if you do, Billy Graham? He’s a hillbilly who looks like Herman Muster, talks like Deputy Dog and sucks up to presidents. Them ain’t good bloodlines. Furthermore: Charlie Sheen, Paris Hilton, George W. Bush. I rest my case.
Unfortunately, Ben is confused about “separation of church and state”. It’s part of the constitution for a reason. For some reason many Americans seem to think that religion belongs in our government but is the ruination of other governments (pick any middle eastern country.) Who decides to whom we pray in tax supported institutions? Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggart, the Pope? Our laws do not prohibit free religious practice; they simply try to keep religious influence out of tax supported institutions. Look what it did for medieval Europe.
Anytime this subject comes up, some people start claiming that they’re being persecuted. Hold on! The religious right has controlled all three branches of government for 8 years. We’ve killed unknown thousands of people, given hundreds of billions to corrupt war profiteers, and millions die of hunger every year. It’s been an orgy of smug self-satisfaction, selfishness and greed. They are not being persecuted!
To say that natural disasters are God’s punishment for “throwing him out of schools” is bullshit! People who are completely innocent and helpless die by the millions every year, and the rich and corrupt live in luxury. This is not my idea of divine justice. This is the kind of crap that southern, jackleg preachers spout, and I’m very disappointed to hear Ben Stein falling for the same shuck. I thought he was smarter than that.
New Orleans happened because it’s below sea level and protected by outdated levees. If this vindictive God wanted to punish “evil” people, he’d have drowned Crawford, Texas
I grew up a fundamentalist holy roller and am well acquainted with this thing. Christians are too often led by demagogues who feel free to quote old and new testament as it suits their purposes. I’ve read the Bible many times and studied it pretty extensively. The Old Testament is extremely violent. Lot’s of killing and adultry. The only love in it is lust, (David and Soloman were absolute horndogs, and God liked them). These overpaid crack brains (preachers and comedians) choose to believe that God is as petty as an irritable 2nd grader. They make big bucks spreading fear, guilt and blame. Everything must be someone’s fault (never theirs).
Face it, Shit happens! For no good reason at all. Little children die of cancer.. Right now over half the children in India are severely malnourished! Dying like flies, but I don’t hear anyone expressing concern. We’re busy praying the gas prices will recede so we can continue to drive gas hogs.
It’s undeniable that our “morals” are in bad shape (whoever decides what they are). But who’s talking about the obscene greed and blatant corruption in our corporations and their servants, the government that are driving our country to the brink of bankruptcy? Not the preachers. They’re busy stirring people up about gay marriage, drugs, welfare, illegals, abortion. Building bigger and richer churches.
To paraphrase PT Barnum, you can never go broke telling people what they want to hear. Oprah has turned this into a high art. Nancy Grace does it with a righteous sneer on her pinched, little lips. It’s called pandering, and people fall for it every generation.
It’s self-righteous horse pucky!
